Fatal Vacation (1990)

Directed by and starring Eric Tsang, Fatal Vacation is a downbeat and action packed film which manages to squeeze in a small dose of social commentary and successful humour along the way.

One of the film's main strengths is its characterisation. Tsang takes time to flesh out the numerous characters to make them mostly believable and likeable regular people. It's obvious from the start that not all of them are going to make it out alive and this gives the action scenes a much greater impact than usual. The film doesn't feature many big names but I think this actually works in its favour as every character gets equal spotlight and chance to shine. The most recognisable faces are Eric Tsang, Tommy Wong and Victor Lam - the latter most will know from numerous Hollywood productions such as Big Trouble In Little China and The Golden Child.

Some of the scenes will be quite harrowing to the non-desensitised (if there are in fact any out there nowadays!?). Particularly powerful is a scene where the holidaymakers are split into two random groups and forced to play Russian Roulette against each other. It packs quite a punch. Some of the scenes of humiliation and torture in the guerrilla camp are a little reminiscent of Tan Tao Liang's Last Breath..though not quite as cheap and graphic.

The scenes towards the end with the group attempting to make a getaway are prety exciting and deliver the goods, making up for a few lags in the pacing during the middle section of the film.

Definitely strongly recommended to all Cat III and women in prison/POW film fans (though the gore is quite minimal, the film maintains quite a grim tone) and also to those looking for some gunplay set to a different back drop than usual. All round solid and well-made entertainment.
